Digital smile design

A photo- and scan-driven preview of the planned result — something to show the patient before anything is cut, and to turn into a wax-up, mock-up and provisionals so the plan actually reaches the mouth.

A digital smile design preview of an aesthetic case
The value of a smile design is agreement — the patient sees the plan and says yes to it before you begin, not at the try-in.

What it is, and what it does for you

Smile design turns photos and a scan into a visual plan for the aesthetic result: proportions, midline, incisal display and arrangement. It's two things at once — a patient-communication tool that wins agreement early, and a blueprint that feeds the wax-up, the mock-up matrix and the provisionals.

What we need to design well

  • Photos — retracted, a full natural smile, and a relaxed portrait for facial reference.
  • A scan or impression of the current situation.
  • The patient's wish, in their words — whiter, more even, close a gap, "like it used to be."
  • Any shade direction — and remember to settle whitening first (see our shade guide).
How we think about it

The best aesthetic cases are agreed before they're started. A smile design is how you get the patient nodding at the plan, and how the plan survives from screen to wax-up to temporaries without drifting.

How we handle it

Smile design is a planning and communication tool, not a clinical diagnosis — the clinical calls stay yours. Our doctor-led QC checks the design against the records, and it flows into a wax-up and provisional matrix when you're ready.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need to start a smile design?
A set of photos (retracted, full smile and a relaxed portrait), a scan or impression, and a note on what the patient wants.
Can the design drive the wax-up and temporaries?
Yes. An approved smile design flows straight into a diagnostic wax-up, mock-up matrix and provisionals, so the plan carries through to the mouth.
Is this a clinical diagnosis?
No. Smile design is a planning and communication tool. The clinical decisions stay yours; we help you visualise and execute the aesthetic plan.
